The Beehive

The Beehive: Nurture & Inclusive Provision at Wookey At Wookey Primary School, we are proud to be a fully inclusive setting. We believe that inclusion is not simply physical presence in a room, it is about a genuine sense of belonging. The Beehive is our small-group nurture setting designed to build safety, secure strong learning foundations, and ensure no child leaves Wookey without the skills to thrive.

How The Beehive Works

The Beehive follows Somerset’s Inclusive Curriculum Model, providing a time-limited, flexible intervention where the balance between whole-class and small-group learning is tailored to every child.

A Day in The Beehive

Watch This Space! - We are currently developing a Sensory Garden right next to our new Beehive building! Designed to be a calming, immersive outdoor space, it will be accessible to anyone across the whole school community who needs a quiet moment to regulate, explore, and recharge.

The 6-Step Journey in The Beehive While every child’s path through The Beehive is fluid and individualised, our strategic progression follows six supportive steps:

  1. Identification: Following Somerset’s Graduated Response, persistent barriers to learning are identified alongside specialist external agencies.
  2. Securing Psychological Safety: Children build trust with highly skilled, relational adults, focusing on self-regulation and understanding their emotions.
  3. Social Connection: Low-threat collaborative activities, like Lego Therapy, ELSA games, and Forest School, help children learn to communicate and share in a low-stress environment.
  4. Secure Foundations: Once safe, children engage in daily deliberate practice of core reading, writing, and number skills to build their identity as successful learners.
  5. Relational Re-building: Children build and strengthen connections with their class teachers and peers, transferring their growing confidence back into the mainstream classroom.
  6. Supported Re-integration: Children spend increasing time in their main class with trusted adult support, fully transferring the strategies learned in The Beehive back into whole-class life.

The Impact: In Our Community’s Words

What our children say:

“In class I used to feel like everyone was staring at me and I couldn’t do my work. I don’t feel like that now.”; “It is fun, I don’t think I would be at school without the Beehive.”; “It is a place where I can just be me.”

What our parents say:

“It has been life-changing; he feels safe and can actually access an education now.”; “The Beehive has brought out my child’s humour… they now smile without it being forced.”; “We no longer have battles to get into school; their worries and anxiety have reduced significantly.”
