Our Curriculum

We have been busy redesigning our curriculum over the past two years. We launched this in September in our classes and are now ready to share our plans and outcomes. Click on the images below to read about how and what we teach in each of the wider curriculum subjects. We are continuously reviewing and adapting our plans as part of our ongoing subject leadership and monitoring process.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (in Little Acorns then Rowan Class), we follow the specific curriculum that is set for this age group. We plan learning opportunities that build the foundations for the knowledge and skills children need to learn the subjects they meet from Year 1 onwards. This Early Years curriculum planning is included in the curriculum progression for each subject so that teachers are clear about what children already know and can encourage them to take their understanding further as they move through the school.

From Year 1, in line with guidelines set by the Department for Education, we follow the National Curriculum. To facilitate mixed age teaching, we use the milestones in the Essentials Curriculum produced by Chris Quigley in a number of subjects, a link to which can be found below. Within these frameworks, our teaching and learning is driven by our core values.

Phonics is taught in the early years using the Twinkl phonics scheme, which has been validated by the DfE. You can find guides as to how we teach reading and writing in all of our classes below.

Our Calculation Policy (below) explains the methods and language we use to teach the four mathematical operations at Wookey, from Reception through to Year 6. We hope that you will find it useful when approaching maths with your children. We have also shared with parents a pack of ideas to integrate the learning of maths into everyday activities and games. Copies of this can be provided via the school office.

Teachers use our curriculum overview to plan collaboratively for the long and medium term. Termly plans are shared with parents via our Seesaw learning journals.
